Every night, without even thinking about it, you always sit on the same side of the bed. A harmless habit? Not really. An American study reveals that this choice could be linked to very specific character traits, to your cultural tastes, or even to your political opinions. Decryption of the study results.
Sleep on the left…
According to this survey, sleepers who opt for the left side of the bed are distinguished by a more vivid imagination and developed creativity. They are often fans of old school music, dramatic films and beer. Politically, they would also display more progressive positions.
Sleep on the right…
Conversely, those who sleep on the right would have a more logical and analytical mind. Their cultural preferences would lean towards rock, action films and wine. Their political orientation would tend to be more conservative.
Why this choice and what consequences on sleep?
The researchers also asked Americans about their motivations:
- 40% simply choose the more accessible side;
- 31% comply with their partner’s preference;
- 25% favor the view of the television.
But the study also reveals a more worrying reality: the majority of Americans sleep an average of only 6 hours 22 minutes per night, well below the 7 to 9 hours recommended by the National Sleep Foundation. Even more worrying, 22% report sleeping only 4 to 5 hours per night. This lack of sleep is associated with decreased concentration, increased stress and a higher risk of chronic diseases.
