Rich in calcium, magnesium or sodium: each water has clean features. But when we present a high tension, which brand turn to? Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical, tells us more.
What water drink when you are hypertensive?
Sodium poor waters are particularly recommended. Indeed, excess sodium promotes water retention and elevation of blood pressure.
“It is therefore advisable to choose waters containing less than 20 mg/l of sodium, and ideally less than 10 mg/l. In the shelves, I recommend that I turn to Mont Roucous with 1.7 mg/L of sodium, Volvic with 9 mg/L, as well as certain source waters of distributor brands such as Carrefour or Cristaline (provided you check the label)”, recognizes Dr Gérald Kierzek.
Water rich in magnesium and calcium are also beneficial.
“Magnesium helps regulate tension thanks to its vasodilator effect, while calcium contributes to the contraction of blood vessels”, reveals the expert. Among the interesting mineral waters, “We can therefore cite the hepar brand which contains 119 mg/L of magnesium and 549 mg/l of calcium, COURMAYEUR with 52 mg/L of magnesium and 517 mg/L of calcium, or counterx with 84 mg/L of magnesium and 486 mg/l of calcium”, indicates the doctor.
The waters to be avoided in case of hypertension
Sodium -rich waters should be avoided because they can worsen hypertension.
“This is the case notably of the St -Yorre brand which contains 1708 mg/l of sodium, Vichy Célestins with 1172 mg/l, and badit with 150 mg/l. Salted sparkling waters, except medical advice, are also to be avoided – even if some, like Rozana, are rich in magnesium. Indeed, the sodium content of all these waters can be problematic for people hypertension “, warns the medical director of True Medical.
Some additional advice
Dr. Gérald Kierzek recommends that everyone attach great importance to the water consumed.
- Always check the labels: the composition varies according to the sources;
- Avoid tap water if it is softened (it can contain more sodium);
- Limit flavored sodas and waters – often sweet and salty;
- Hydrate yourself enough (1.5 to 2 l/day, except medical contraindication).
“In summary, the waters to be favored are those which are poor in sodium, like Mont Roucous or Volvic, and those rich in magnesium and calcium, like Hépar or Contrex, even if they contain a little more sodium. On the other hand, it is better to avoid strongly salty waters like St-Yorre, Vichy Célestins or Badit. in salt (like the Dash diet), can really help better control your tension “, concludes the medical director of True Medical.
