Does your eyes cry at the slightest cold cold? This simple gesture would stop reflexed tearing
As soon as you put your nose outside in cold weather, do you feel embarrassment at the eye level and they start to cry? We explain why and how to reduce this phenomenon.

The flow of tears, apart from sorrow, is a natural reflex that is set up to protect the eyes. In winter, when it is very cold, it is not uncommon for our eyes to start crying uncontrolled. This phenomenon, although Benin, can quickly become uncomfortable if you stay outside for a long time.

A reaction of the eye to hydrate the cornea.

Tears are produced by the lacrimal glands and accumulate in the canals located in the inner corner of each eye. They can flow in the nose or get out of the eye. We then speak of reflex tears. It occurs when the eye is irritated by a foreign body (dust, eyelash …) or when you cut an onion for example. But it can also occur when the eye is exposed to a cold and dry air that irritates the eyes. This irritation will stimulate the lacrimal gland, which will start to produce more tears than usual. It is simply a natural defense mechanism of the eye to keep the hodied cornea, which is particularly vulnerable to cold.

This excessive tearing can also be caused by an allergy, a respiratory tract infection or ocular drought.

How to counter this effect?

This phenomenon being a reflex mechanism of the eye triggered by irritation, one cannot really avoid it. However, it is possible to limit it by wearing glasses. These form a protective barrier against the wind, which limits the direct effect of cold air on the eyes, thereby reducing watershed. Preferably opt for glasses that cover the sides well (cycling or hiking glasses).

If tears bother you, especially do not rub your eyes because it could worsen irritation (with even more tears to the key) and increase the risk of infection if your hands are dirty. To wipe your tears, use a clean handkerchief and delicately dab around the eye. If your tears are linked to eye dryness, you can use artificial tears. They help hydrate the eyes and reduce irritation. Ask your pharmacist for advice.
