What are the health risks?
The bacteria Escherichia coli O55belonging to the family of Toxigenic Shiga E.coli (STEC)can cause within a week of consumption sometimes bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, vomiting and sometimes fever.
In some cases (5 to 8% of infections), these symptoms can progress to severe kidney complicationknown as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)mainly affecting young children.
Consumers who have eaten this cheese and exhibit these symptoms should consult their doctor immediately specifying the consumption of the product and the place of purchase. On the other hand, in the absence of symptoms within 15 daysno medical procedure is necessary.
The authorities also point out some general precautions:
- Avoid the consumption of raw milk and of raw milk cheeses for sensitive populations (children, pregnant women, elderly or immunocompromised people).
- Favor the cooked pressed cheeses (Comté type, Emmental).
- GOOD cook the ground meats thoroughly (70°C).
- Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
How to get reimbursed?
The producer Elichiry Argitxu specifies that the goat cheese from lot 712 must not under no circumstances be consumed. Affected customers can contact the point of sale directly where the transaction took place in order to obtain a personalized solutionTHE refund or the destruction of the product being recommended depending on the case.
No proof of purchase is required to receive compensation. The procedure of product recall will remain active until January 15, 2026.
