In 2026, singles have not put love away. According to the dating app happn, which surveyed 6,500 singles around the world, relationships evolve in a strange mix between the desire to believe in it and the need to remain realistic. Romance, money, artificial intelligence, sexuality or male models, everything is rethought, but without giving up the essential: sincere, simple and human relationships.
Romanticism makes a comeback, modern version
After having a series of one-night-stand relationships, many want to slow down. In 2026, 25% of singles say they are confident about their love life. For their part, 47% prefer to move forward without too many expectations, but without closing the door to feelings.
Romantic films and series have a lot to do with it. Novels and old-fashioned love stories make you want to believe in them again. As a result, one in five single people still dream of a big story. This new version of romanticism involves simple things. A home-cooked meal, an aimless walk, flowers, a hand-written letter. Gestures that count for more than a long speech and that bring a little magic back to meetings.
Allied men, yes… but not just in words
Values are taking up more and more space in dating, especially with the rise of masculinist discourse. For 43% of singles, the feminist positions of a potential partner are important.
But the distrust is there. One in two respondents doubt men who present themselves as allies without showing it in their actions. This caution does not only concern women: 48% of men also say they are suspicious.
In 2026, singles are no longer content with nice sentences but above all they look at how others act on a daily basis.
AI enters dating, but without stealing the show
Artificial intelligence is everywhere, and dating is no exception. Some use AIs to chat, train or gain self-confidence.
But virtual relationships still remain in the minority. Only 7% of singles plan a romantic relationship entirely online. On the other hand, 48% see no problem with their partner interacting regularly with an AI, since it is not a real person.
This year, 80% of singles plan to use AI for short conversations. A helping hand to better formulate your ideas or manage your emotions, without replacing a real meeting.
Money and dates, an accepted subject
Another big change: talking about money is no longer awkward! For 87% of singles, sharing the same financial values is important. 34% even broach the subject during the first meetings.
Some old codes are coming back since 53% of respondents believe that it is up to the man to pay for the first date. Faced with this, 65% of singles rely on dates for zero euros. Walk, chat, improvise… Creativity takes over when the wallet remains limited!
Sex, without pressure
Sexuality also changes. In 2026, it is less linked to performance, and more to well-being. For 31% of singles, sex is not a priority. Masturbation, practiced regularly by 21% of respondents, becomes a way to relax and release pressure, without the pressure of having a partner.
At the same time, 36% of French men and women want to explore their sexuality, without trying to impress anyone. The objective is above all to feel good, aligned and listening to yourself.
