Long perceived as a marginal practice, meditation has established itself as an essential tool for managing stress, improving concentration and strengthening mental well-being. But a question remains: how long does it really take to feel its effects? According to a study published in the journal
Mindfulnessthe response is surprisingly fast. In just a few minutes, the brain already begins to transform.
Brain changes in minutes
To better understand the speed of these effects, researchers monitored in real time the neuronal activity of volunteers practicing a meditation technique based on breathing. Using a helmet equipped with 128 sensors, they observed that the brain modifies its electrical patterns from the first two to three minutes.
Concretely, brain activity gradually moves from a state of distraction to a state of relaxed wakefulness. Alpha and theta waves, associated with calm and concentration, increase, as do certain waves related to active attention. Conversely, the waves associated with drowsiness decrease. A quick changeover, which shows that even a short break can have a measurable effect.
A peak of efficiency around 7 minutes
One of the most striking results of the study concerns timing: the most significant effects are observed between the seventh and tenth minute of meditation. In other words, a very short session can already achieve an optimal level of benefits.
Interestingly, experienced meditators don’t necessarily reach this state faster, but when they do, their brain activity is more intense. In them, specific signatures appear even in the first 30 seconds, a sign of training of the brain to enter deeper into this state.
A practice accessible to everyone, even in a hurry
These results confirm a key idea: no need for long sessions to benefit from the benefits of meditation. Even in a busy daily life, a few minutes are enough to initiate positive changes at the cognitive and emotional level.
Researchers thus highlight the potential of short formats, particularly via applications or online programs. Sessions of 7 minutes or more could provide a simple, accessible and effective solution to improve mental well-being on a large scale.
