Like every year, have you planned a simple lemon juice to accompany your oysters? Big mistake. This Christmas, the perfect accompaniment for your shellfish will neither be citrus fruits nor shallot sauce… but Red Bull. A great idea to reproduce? If some fervent defenders of oysters are (already) fiercely opposed to them, we asked a nutrition expert.
“Red Bull oyster”: an astonishing combo
Although the pairing of oysters and Red Bull may seem surprising, even somewhat appetizing, in reality, some oyster farmers… already say they are convinced.
“We must not remain on negative preconceptions“, says Quentin on Instagram, before tasting this clever mixture imagined by Guillaume Sanchez, former Top Chef candidate. Verdict? “It goes together really well. I really wasn’t expecting anything and I’m not disappointed at all.” he adds.
Other “testers” revealed that Red Bull would enhance the taste of the oyster.
For his part, the inventor of this audacious association, Guillaume Sanchez, is obviously won over: “At no point do we say to ourselves that this is a good idea but it works“, he admits. His video of the agreement “the most problematic (that he) knows” has also been viewed more than 450,000 times on Tik Tok.
However, a problem remains: Red Bull is far from being beneficial for health. It causes undesirable effects in certain consumers (heart palpitations, high blood pressure, etc.), particularly when consumed in excess.
So, should we ignore this viral combo? Vanessa Bedjaï-Haddad, dietitian-nutritionist, analyzes the effects of this amazing duo on the body.
“No nutritional benefit”
According to the expert, this is a “typical” TikTok trend: surprising, a little provocative, designed more to create buzz than to be nutritionally relevant.
“Pairing oysters with an energy drink like Red Bull is not occasionally dangerous for a healthy person, but it does not provide any nutritional benefit… and even less flavor for the majority of consumers,”
she explains.
On the one hand, oysters – naturally rich in iodine, zinc and proteins – are often appreciated for their freshness and their iodized flavor. On the other hand, Red Bull contains mainly sugar, caffeine and other stimulants.
“Combining them does not provide anything additional to the body, except an artificial stimulation which may be poorly tolerated, particularly on the digestive or cardiovascular level in sensitive people,” specifies the dietitian.
This type of trend above all reflects our current relationship to food on social networks: “We seek the shock, the “never before seen”, more than common sense or balance. This “recipe” can therefore be tested out of simple curiosity, but it should neither be trivialized nor reproduced regularly. Diet is not a viral challenge: it is above all a question of pleasure, tolerance and respect for your body. concludes Vanessa Bedjaï-Haddad.
