Access to care is at the heart of the concerns of the French. Between the shortage of doctors and the endless waiting times in the emergency room, the new Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has made this subject one of his priorities. But its last promise – guarantee each Frenchman an accessible offer accessible within 30 minutes – is debated. Dr. Eric Reboli, an emergency doctor accustomed to the field, shares his point of view on this subject.
5000 “France Health” houses by 2027, the Prime Minister’s promise
By 2027, Sébastien Lecornu wishes to build an ambitious health network, by opening no less than 5000 houses “France Health”, on the model of “France Services” houses. These structures would aim to bring together different health professionals – general practitioners, nurses, midwives – in order to offer the French access to facilitated care. The idea being that everyone can benefit from these services within a radius of 30 minutes.
A staggering site (+ 2500 health house in less than 18 months) which, according to the Prime Minister, would allow to combat medical deserts. But does this promise constitute a simple “ad effect” or is it really achievable? We asked the question to Dr. Eric Reboli, emergency doctor, and here is his answer.
An attractive goal, but far from being realistic according to Dr Reboli
If the project seems attractive on paper, several voices rise to underline the limits. Dr. Éric Reboli, an emergency doctor, is precisely opposed to this measure, which constitutes for him a “false solution“.
“”The French are today at 28 minutes on average on average of a care offer. Promise 30 minutes is therefore not progress “, he underlines, relying in particular the words of the College of General Medicine and on the figures issued by the IRDES on behalf of the DREES.
“”With which doctors to fill these houses?“”
The practitioner also wonders about the means implemented: “We are talking about 5000 health homes, but with which doctors to fill them? We already have enough practitioners to cover existing structures“, He regrets. For him, the problem is therefore not to build new brand new premises, but to respond to the lack of staff.
“We have the impression that the current hospital system no longer exists and that the government wants to replace it. But we have doctors on the spot who are only overwhelmed. Hospitals still exist, but their activity is regulated, even stopped, for lack of staff. Sébastien Lecornu therefore shifts the problem … forgetting what is behind”, says the doctor.
The real emergency according to doctors: invest in humans, not within the walls
Dr. Éric Reboli therefore criticizes the global approach of government, who forgets on the way … Human. “These medical houses are likely to become gas factories. We must bet on human value and not only in new walls. The real solution is not therefore to open medical houses, but to invest in doctors and nursing staff, by offering them decent wages and better working conditions”, underlines the medical expert. Questioned by TF1, Fabienne Yvon, general practitioner of the MG France union takes the same speech, regretting the lack of attractiveness of the “” profession “both in terms of exercise constraints, but also in terms of remuneration“. Some brand new medical houses would be empty or partly empty, for lack of health professionals …
“Ultimately, instead of supporting professionals, we set up rules that complicate the lives of replacements and discourage the installation of doctors in medical deserts”, concludes Dr Éric Reboli.
