In the summer, many of us suffer from sun damage. However, once in front of the “soothing” cream sections of the supermarket, the choice can become difficult. Which product to turn to in case of sunburn? Dr Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical, enlightens us.
Sunburn: which product should be favored?
According to the doctor, “biafine – or its generic equivalent, tremethamine – is ideal for treating mild to moderate sunburns. It is a great pharmacy classic, effective in soothing the epidermis”, he admits.
Indeed, this light emulsion hydrates and calms the feeling of tightness. “It contains active ingredients (tremethamine) which help with skin repair. It is recommended in France for superficial, first-degree burns,” specifies the expert.
However, said cream has some limitations:
- It is not recommended in cases of severe sunburn (presence of blisters, very red or purplish skin): in these situations, it is preferable to consult a health professional;
- It can create an occlusive film on the skin, trapping heat, unlike options like aloe vera or cooling gels;
- Beware of skin prone to allergies: certain formulations contain preservatives that can cause reactions.
Biafine: how to apply it?
According to the brand’s official website, 2 to 3 daily applications, evenly spaced, are recommended. Instructions for use, confirmed by Dr Gérald Kierzek:
1. “Gently clean the area with cool water,” he indicates.
2. “Spread a thin layer of Biafine 2 to 3 times a day”, continues the expert.
3. “Do not expose yourself to the sun after application (risk of photosensitivity)”, concludes the medical director of True Medical.
“Biafine Act constitutes a close alternative, and more fluid, with a formula containing panthenol with healing properties, sometimes better tolerated by sensitive skin”, reveals Dr Gérald Kierzek.
In summary:
- Yes to biafine for light sunburns, in addition to aloe vera.
- No, if the skin is very irritated or blistered. Choose pure aloe gel or a hydrocolloid dressing for blisters.
“Finally, always test the product on a small area if you have never used it before. And of course, prevention (SPF50+ sunscreen and clothing) remains the best solution!” concludes the medical director of True Medical.
