First of all, you have to keep in mind that pets are passengers like the others. Their masters must take the necessary arrangements to ensure that they travel by car in the best possible conditions. It is out of the question to let them walk around as they please in a moving vehicle.
To ensure their safety, it is preferable to put them in a transport box, or to attach them to one of the safety belts of the rear shell using a harness. For large dogs, it is possible to install a protective net on the back of the front seats. Break drivers can also place a separation grid at the trunk. But beware, with this device, the dog can be injured in case of braking.
In general, article R 412-6 of the Highway Code stipulates that “The driver must be constantly in state and in a position to execute conveniently and without delay all the maneuvers incumbent upon him“. He must therefore not be embarrassed or distracted by one of his passengers from his vehicle, including his domestic animal. If necessary, he is exposed to a fine.
Apart from not letting your little companion wandered in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, you must take care of its comfort by adopting some reflexes. For example, avoid feeding your hair ball just before hitting the road. This is likely to accentuate his discomfort if he has transport evil. Car travel can be stressful for animals. This is why it is advisable to adopt a flexible and soft driving to avoid jolts as much as possible.
Also keep an eye on the temperature within the car, the animals being much more sensitive to the heat than us. It can be tempting to let your dog or cat pass the head with an open window so that he refreshes himself. But it is a false good idea that can be very dangerous. To avoid hot strokes, it is better to take regular breaks. This will allow your animal to get air and stretch their legs. Encourage him to drink during these downtime so that he is well hydrated.
Finally, if you should momentarily leave your vehicle without your pet, be vigilant. In summer, mercury can quickly climb in a car, even parked in the shade. So do not hesitate to use sun visors to protect your animal from excessive heat, and make sure it has access to fresh water.
