This scene was filmed at Newton County Animal Services, a refuge from Georgia. The dog, a young male weighing around 18 kg, had just been left there by his owners. At the shelter, Khari’s cry of despair freezes the blood
Behind the number #22948, the shelter has written a first name: Khari. In the images posted on TikTok by the organization Rescue Me ATL, we see him standing full length against the door of his box. He stretches his paw through the bars, as if to grab the hand of the employee who has come to console him, and screams without catching his breath.
The clip has exceeded 46,000 views. Many Internet users say they have turned off the sound, unable to bear more than a few seconds of this cry of despair.
‘Love-loving’ puppy lost behind bars
What also struck the Newton County Animal Services team was Khari’s condition upon arrival. The puppy is described as being “very well cared for.” Clean coat, correct weight, look accustomed to humans: everything shows that he grew up in a warm home. According to volunteers, he is sociable and loves playing with other dogs…
For him, reality has nothing to do with shelter overcrowding which affects the Atlanta area. He doesn’t know that the boxes are full, that the teams must choose which dogs to put forward. Khari only feels the rupture: yesterday arms and games, today a door closing and a silence he tries to tear apart by screaming.
A viral video that reveals a much broader crisis
The emotion aroused by the video is immense. Posts on social media talk about how the dog’s whines sound like almost human calls. Faced with this distress, Rescue Me ATL launched an appeal to urgently find a family for Khari before he dies of sadness. The goal is simple: to transform this buzz into adoption, so that it finally leaves the concrete.
Because the story of Khari is not only played out in Georgia. In France too, the SPA and nearly 800 associations are warning: in 2024, approximately 117,000 abandonments dogs and cats were recorded, and more than 38,000 cases of treatment were refused due to lack of space. In every full kennel, another dog watches for the slightest sound of footsteps, hoping to one day see the faces he loved again.
