You have just met someone, the exchanges are fluid, the flow passes… but a doubt persists: is this person really single? Many do not dare to ask the question for fear of appearing indiscreet or of ruining the magic of the beginnings. However, a tip that went viral on TikTok could help you get the answer… without ever directly addressing the subject.
A simple question that often says a lot
The trick was popularized by Jaimee Hassos, producer of the Australian show Kyle and Jackie O. Relayed on TikTok, his video has exceeded 1.4 million views and attracted many Internet users with its simplicity.
His advice? Ask the person where they went on their last vacation.
“Ask where his last vacation was and see if he spontaneously mentions his partner”she explains.
The idea is simple: when we tell a memorable memory, we often naturally evoke the people who shared it with us. If someone immediately talks about “my girlfriend”, “my boyfriend”, “my husband” or “we left…”, this gives a clue about their romantic situation, without having to ask the famous question.
Observe… without investigating
This technique works mainly because it fits naturally into a conversation.
For example, you can ask:
- “Where did you go this summer?” ;
- “Did you do anything nice on your last weekend?” ;
- “Have you already planned your next vacation?”
The goal is not to dissect every word or play detective. Some people travel alone as a couple, others go with their friends or family. Conversely, a single person can use “we” to talk about a group.
In other words, it is a clue, not proof.
Can social media really help?
Many people also have the habit of checking Instagram or Facebook before a first date.
Vacation photos, selfies for two, stories or recent publications can sometimes give some clues. But again, be careful: some people voluntarily protect their privacy, while others regularly post photos with their friends, which can easily lead to confusion.
Social media rarely shows the full reality of a relationship.
The best method ultimately remains… to ask the question
As clever as it is, the holiday tip is no substitute for honest discussion.
If doubt persists after several discussions, it is often simpler — and more respectful — to ask directly.
A simple: “By the way, are you single right now?” is generally sufficient to remove any ambiguity.
This may seem intimidating, but it’s also the clearest way to avoid misunderstandings. After all, a straightforward question is better than a long investigation punctuated by hypotheses and interpretations.
Because while little tips can sometimes help break the ice, they will never replace sincere communication, which is essential for building a relationship on good foundations. Communication that can also avoid many misunderstandings.
