In the daily life of a couple, routines play a central role. They regulate the distribution of tasks, family organization, the management of children, and shape the rhythm of the home. These automatisms, often discreet, make it possible to cope with the multiple pressures of daily life: busy schedule, professional obligations and other parental responsibilities.
The importance of a change of scenery
Although they may seem monotonous, these habits are essential. They provide a structuring framework, reliable benchmarks, and facilitate the management of priorities in a world where everything is accelerating. But routines, as reassuring as they are, can also become stifling when they are never questioned. What was once a source of wonder between two partners can turn into automatisms devoid of emotion. Through repetition, passion crumbles, giving way to a form of boredom which can weaken the relationship. To escape this spiral, a change of scenery is necessary. Going on vacation — whether you choose to relax on a beach, explore a new destination or take a cruise on the open sea — offers a real break from everyday life.
The momentum needed to rekindle the flame
Vacations have a positive impact on couple relationships. In any case, this is what two studies carried out by researchers reveal, respectively involving 234 individuals and then 204 couples (Coffey et al., 2024). The first study examined the differences between going alone and going as a couple, while the two studies analyzed the extent to which participants engaged in activities promoting their personal development during their vacation. The results indicate that a trip for two, punctuated by activities promoting personal development, can intensify romantic passion upon return. Away from the daily grind, couples have a better physical connection. The link between vacations and relationship quality has been observed, regardless of the duration of the relationship. In other words, whether a recent couple or a long-term union, sharing a trip can bring concrete benefits to the relationship.
Quality is more important than quantity
According to researchers, it is not the frequency of trips, but their quality that seems decisive for the health of the couple. With so many vacation options available, the choice can seem difficult. However, recent studies suggest favoring getaways that include original and enriching activities. The objective? Get out of routine and discover new experiences together. And the good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune: a simple but well-designed stay can be just as beneficial for the relationship as a high-end trip — as long as it brings a breath of novelty and shared pleasure.
