What is Condyline?
Condyline is a cutaneous solution that contains an active ingredient podophyllotoxin. Podophyllotoxin is an extract from mayapple plant (Podophyllum peltatum) roots and is an antiviral. With its active ingredient, Condyline treats genital warts from the source.
What are Genital Warts?
Genital warts are sexually transmitted infections (STIs) caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). It is one of the most common types of STIs that sexually active people usually get infected with.
Genital warts will usually vary in appearance in every people; some will appear as a so small and flat, almost invisible. While others, especially those with suppressed immune systems, can have large clusters.
How does Condyline work?
Podophyllotoxin will prevent the wart-causing virus from dividing and multiplying. Since most genital warts are a result of the transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV), Condyline kills the said virus to eliminate genital warts. After it kills HPV, healthy tissues will start to replace the dead wart cells.
What are the benefits of using Condyline for genital warts treatment?
Although genital warts only have low-risk HPV strains, it can bring discomfort. This sexually transmitted infection can show through small, flesh-coloured, brown or pink bumps around the genital area, itching and discomfort, and bleeding during sexual intercourse.
When you use Condyline, you can find relief from the symptoms and get rid of genital warts permanently (you may still get infected if your partner has untreated genital warts). Also, you can stop the infection from spreading to other people resulting in more enjoyable sex life.
What causes genital warts?
As mentioned, a strain of HPV can cause genital warts. It is mostly contracted through sexual contact with someone who is already infected. Sexually active people have a higher risk of getting this infection, but more so if any of the following applies:
- Engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners
- Currently having another sexually transmitted infection
- Engaging in sex with a partner you don’t know the sexual history
- Participating in sexual activities at a young age
- Having a compromised immune system, due to HIV or drugs from an organ transplant
What are the warnings and precautionary measures?
Before you use this product, it is best to consult with your doctor first to determine if it suits your condition, symptoms, and other medical factors.
If you have any of the following, it is best not to use Condyline as a treatment for genital warts.
- Allergies or hypersensitivity to podophyllotoxin or any of the ingredients of this medicine
- Inflamed or bleeding lesions
- Open wounds due to surgical procedures
- Taking other podophyllin-containing medications
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Children under 12 years old
Also, it is important not to apply the solution to healthy and uninfected skin. If warts in your genital area exceed a four (4) cm coverage, a medical professional should apply the solution.
Moreover, there is no known or reported interaction between Condyline and other medications. And it does not interfere or poses a risk to driving or using machines. Again, always inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions or current treatments to ensure it does not cause unwanted, adverse effects.
Before you use this medication, you should consult with your doctor to get medical advice and prescription. You should follow the instruction as provided in the prescription and read through the patient information leaflet enclosed in the pack to know more about Condyline.
Before you use this medication, make sure that the affected area is clean. Wash it with soap and water, then gently pat it dry.
The pack contains disposable applicators that you should use every treatment schedule; do not use your fingers. A hole can be located at the end of the applicator; the hole will catch the required amount of Condyline solution as you dib it inside the bottle.
After taking the solution, apply it evenly to each wart, making sure you do it one at a time without applying it onto your healthy skin and wait for it to dry naturally. Since the hole in the applicator is small and only catches enough solution for each wart, make sure you do not exceed dipping it 50 times into the bottle.
The recommended administration of this treatment is twice a day for three (3) days. It is best to start the treatment by morning and wait for a 12-hour interval before applying the next dose. It is a three-day only treatment; however, you can continue it, if necessary. You should space out the treatment course weekly for a total of five weeks of treatment.
If your symptoms are still present, persistent or worsen after you complete the recommended treatment course, contact your doctor right away to discuss other treatment alternatives.
The active ingredient podophyllotoxin has a 0.5% concentration on a 3.5 ml bottle. Doctors will usually recommend that you use this product for a total of six (6) treatments within three (3) days; twice a day. You should not exceed the said treatment course unless otherwise advised by your doctor.
Before you continue with the recommended extension treatment course, consult with your doctor first to ensure it is safe for you. Do not self-medicate; always ask guidance from your doctor before using the product again after your first treatment course.
You can apply the solution as soon as you remember if you have forgotten to do so within your schedule. However, if has already elapsed the recommended 12-hour interval, or it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and proceed with the next dose. Do not double dose to make up for the missed one as it can bring adverse effects.
If you use it more than the required times or apply it over uninfected areas, wash the area with soap and water immediately. If you or anyone accidentally ingests the solution, inform your doctor or seek emergency medical help right away.
Condyline, like other medications, can cause side effects, especially when not administered properly. Watch out for these side effects:
