Frequently Asked Questions

What is Valtrex?

Valtrex is an antiviral medication used to treat herpes (genital or otherwise) in adults. It contains the active ingredient valaciclovir that works by stopping the growth of viruses.

This medicine can also be used to treat shingles and cold sores. It can also be used to prevent infection with cytomegalovirus after organ transplants and herpes single virus infections of the eye that continue to come back.

What are the ingredients of Valtrex?

The active substance of Valtrex is valaciclovir. Each tablet contains 250 mg or 500 mg of valaciclovir (as valaciclovir hydrochloride).

Other ingredients are Microcrystalline cellulose, Crospovidone, Povidone, Magnesium stearate, and Silica colloidal anhydrous for the tablet core; and Hypromellose, Titanium dioxide, Macrogol 400, Polysorbate 80 (500 mg tablets only), and Carnauba wax for the film coat.

Valtrex tablets are contained in polyvinyl chloride/aluminium foil blister packs.

Valtrex Tablets are supplied in cartons containing white, film-coated tablets marked with ā€œGX CF1ā€ on one side.

How does Valtrex work?

Valaciclovir, the active ingredient of Valtrex, stops the spread of viruses such as herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, and cytomegalovirus. It controls the symptoms by stopping the enzyme needed for the virus to grow. By inhibiting the growth of the virus, the infection is reduced and shortened.

What are the benefits of taking Valtrex?

Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. It causes blisters and itching around the genitals, which can be painful and uncomfortable.

With the use of Valtrex, the symptoms of herpes are quickly treated and prevented from being transferred.

Who should not use Valtrex?

Valtrex can be used by adults and adolescents over the age of 12 who are experiencing outbreaks of the herpes simplex virus and its associated symptoms.

Valtrex should not be used if you have an allergy to valaciclovir or aciclovir or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (check product leaflet), or if you have ever developed an extended rash associated with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, increased levels of liver enzymes and/or eosinophilia after taking valaciclovir.

Consult with your doctor before taking Valtrex tablets if you have kidney problems, liver problems, are over 65 years old, or if your immune system is weak.

If Valtrex is being used to treat or prevent genital herpes, it is recommended to use condoms during sexual intercourse to prevent the transfer of the infection to your partner. If you have genital sores or blisters, do not have sex.

Take the tablets by swallowing whole with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food intake. It is recommended that you take this medicine at approximately the same time of the day to help you remember.

Valtrex, with an active ingredient of valaciclovir (as valaciclovir hydrochloride monohydrate), comes in two dosages: 250mg and 500mg. Depending on your condition, your doctor will advise the correct dosage to treat your medical condition.

For genital herpes, the usual dose is 500mg two times a day. During the first time, the Valtrex tablets should be taken for 5 to 10 days, depending on the advice of the doctor. A returning outbreak can be treated for 3 to 5 days. To prevent any further outbreaks, the usual dose is 500mg once a day for as long as your doctor prescribes it.

However, your dosage can change if in case your immune system weakens, you have kidney problems, you are over 65 years old, or you are treating another kind of herpes (such as shingles).

If you forget to take a Valtrex tablet, you can take it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one and just proceed with the next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

If too many Valtrex tablets are taken, contact a doctor immediately. This may cause kidney damage.

Users of this medicine are encouraged to drink a lot of water while taking Valtrex tablets to avoid a potentially damaging effect on your kidneys and nervous system.
