What is Doxycycline?

Doxycycline is an antibiotic that belongs to the group called tetracycline that is used to treat bacterial infections including chlamydia, a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Aside from treating STIs such as chlamydia, Doxycycline may also be used for treating chest, lung or nasal infections (e.g. bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis), urinary tract infections, (e.g. cystitis, urethritis), acne, other sexually transmitted diseases (e.g. gonorrhoea, syphilis), eye infection, and malaria. It may also be used to prevent some infections, such as travellers’ diarrhoea and leptospirosis.

How does Doxycycline work?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria called chlamydia trachomatis. It does not usually manifest in symptoms that is why getting a chlamydia test is important before taking a chlamydia medication.

Doxycycline, being a type of tetracycline antibiotic, works by by killing the bacteria. It affects the growth of protein production in the cell, including the bacterial cell. It inhibits the multiplication of bacteria, preventing the infection to develop while the immune system destroys it.

What are the benefits of taking Doxycycline?

Symptoms of sexually transmitted infection chlamydia may not always manifest itself in the patient but should be checked and addressed properly as soon as possible. When not treated, it may spread or even cause inflammation. In worst cases, chlamydia may even lead to infertility.

Using Doxycycline can treat the symptoms of chlamydia and stop the spread of the infection.
