Frequently Asked Questions

What is Logynon?

A hormonal contraceptive, the Logynon pill is a combined contraceptive pill that has two types of female sex hormones: estrogen and progestogen, which prevents the user from getting pregnant.

It has two active ingredients: ethynylestradiol (synthetic estrogen) and levonorgestrel (synthetic progesterone).

This pill is sometimes prescribed to women with irregular, painful, and heavy menstrual periods due to its effect of a lighter, more regular, and less painful menstrual bleeding.

Logynon comes in a form of a 21-day pill that you take each day for 21 days, to be followed by a break of no pills for 7 days.

How does Logynon work?

The Logynon pill contains synthetic versions of female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone that prevent pregnancy. These hormones work by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries, by thickening the fluid (mucus) in the cervix to block the sperm from entering the womb, and by thinning the womb lining to make it unconducive for an egg to be fertilized.

What are the benefits of taking the Logynon pill?

Logynon is one of the most reliable reversible methods of contraception when used properly. The synthetic estrogen and progesterone hormones convince the body to believe that ovulation is done, thus preventing the ripening and the release of an egg from the ovaries. Logynon still works effectively even when a fertilized egg is released by the ovary because it makes the natural mucus in the cervix thick, blocking the sperm from entering the womb.

How do I use the Logynon pill?

A valid prescription from your doctor is needed to buy Logynon. Users are advised to follow the instructions of the doctor and read the available patient information leaflet that comes inside the medicine. Inform your doctor of any other past and existing medical conditions that you may have.

Triphasic pill Logynon comes in a 21- day pack that is divided into three types of tablets, each type has a different dose of hormones. Each type of tablet is marked with a different color. The six light brown tablets contain 30 micrograms ethynylestradiol and 50 micrograms levonorgestrel, the five white tablets have 40 micrograms ethynylestradiol and 75 micrograms levonorgestrel, and the ten ochre tablets contain 30 micrograms ethynylestradiol and 125 micrograms levonorgestrel.

The tablets should be taken in order as specified on the label. Start the first pill by taking the light brown pills marked “1.” Take one tablet every day (at approximately the same time) for 21 days. After this, take a break for 7 days with no pills. A withdrawal bleed will follow during the break because of the drop of hormones in the blood. You can start the new strip of pills on the next day after the 7-day break, even if there is still bleeding.

The effectivity of the contraceptive still works during the 7-day break with no pills, provided that the pills are taken correctly and on time.

Take the pill orally by swallowing whole and then drink water. It can be taken with or without food intake.

Other methods of contraception are not needed when using Logynon. Those with a very short menstrual cycle will not get contraceptive protection if you start the pills on the fifth day of your period.

If you are a new user of the pill, you can take it on the first day of your next menstrual period. You will have contraceptive protection from your first pill.

Those who have just given birth and not breastfeeding can start taking the pill 21 days after your delivery, provided you are fully mobile. Other methods of contraception such as a condom should be used before Logynon and in the first 7 days of taking the pill.

If you have had a miscarriage or abortion under 24 weeks, start the pill immediately to give you protection from pregnancy. If taken more than 7 days after the miscarriage or abortion, an extra contraception is needed in the first 7 days of pill-taking.

Those who have missed a pill or started the strip one day late can take the missed pill as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two pills at a time. Continue taking the rest of the pills as scheduled. You don’t have to use any additional contraception.

You will not have contraceptive protection if two pills were missed or you started the new strip two or more days late. Take the last missed pill together with the pill for the day, even if it means taking two pills at a time. Do not use the other pills that you have missed. Continue taking the rest of the pills as scheduled. Use additional contraception such as condoms for 7 days.

If less than seven pills are remaining from the strip after your last missed pill, finish the pills and then start a new strip immediately without the 7-day break of no pills.

If you experience vomiting in the first two hours of taking the pill, the effectivity of the pill may have been reduced. Take a new pill and your next pill on your usual schedule. You will still be protected at this time.

Logynon is not a protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

First-time users of Logynon may experience irregularity in menstruation such as spotting, breakthrough bleeding, or missed period. If the bleeding persists, consult your doctor. Use a pregnancy test if you do not have a withdrawal bleed for two consecutive months before you start a new strip.
