Core training is a static muscle strengthening exercise that works the abdominal muscles, thus improving posture and toning the body.
Unlike classic abs, it does not rely on movement, but on resistance against gravity. However, it is not very effective for significant weight loss and must be supplemented by cardio exercises and a suitable diet.
Does core training really burn calories?
Although core training helps tone deep muscles and visually flatten the stomach, it does not have a direct impact on reducing abdominal fat. For sports coach Guillaume Feuillu, the observation is clear.
“We know very well that we cannot lose weight just by doing a little core training. This is not possible. In fact, it cannot make us lose weight because it engages the small muscles of the abdominal strap. It is not by only working these small muscles, which consume little energy, that we will be able to lose weight.”
Why is sheathing not enough to transform the silhouette?
To lose weight, it is not enough to contract your muscles, you must increase the body’s overall energy expenditure. Guillaume Feuillu explains the crucial nuance between toning and developing muscle mass.
“Sheathing works the muscle, but does not create muscle. Today, you have a percentage of muscle mass. If you do sheathing, you will work the muscle to tone it, but you will not develop it. However, to lose weight, you have to develop muscle because muscle consumes more energy than fat.”
Weight loss then remains a mathematical equation: it is linked to the calorie deficit, that is to say the balance between physical activity and food intake.
A piece of the puzzle for a healthy lifestyle
Doing core training every day can be interesting, as long as you stay reasonable. A few minutes are enough to strengthen the figure, but it is essential to alternate the types of positions and plan recovery days. Guillaume Feuillu sees this exercise as a starting point:
“It’s the beginning of a first step towards improvement. It’s a piece of the puzzle. If you don’t do anything nearby, you might feel a little more muscular, that’s possible, but in terms of weight loss or figure, nothing will happen.”
In summary, core training is an excellent complement to improve support and deep strength. But it is absolutely not a miracle solution for losing weight. For real results, combine it with cardio, weight training and a balanced diet.
