Deprived and without support, parents file a complaint against their autistic teenager, which has become violent
Out of breath, parents had no choice but to appeal to the police and to file a complaint against their own autistic son, which has become too violent. They hope to alert against the lack of care that continues in France, around autistic adolescents.

They filed a complaint against their 14 -year -old son. A traumatic decision, but necessary, for these parents whose autistic son had become a danger, for him as for them. A decision that highly highlights the gaps in autism in our country.

“He tore my husband’s retina”

The couple of parents, established in Isère, thus testified to their breathlessness in the Dauphiné liberated June 9. Cindy and Sébastien, have noted the behavior change of their child Camron, suffering from autistic disorders. Violence appeared in the young man following a period of school harassment. But while precisely, the couple would have needed the appropriate medical support, it is at this point that the management seems to be lacking. “His comrades knew that he was going to the CMP (Medico-Psychological Center) and made fun of him. Camron did not want to go there and his psychiatrist decided that follow-up would be limited to a monthly meeting with him”, testifies the mother.

A refusal of care in hospitals

Cindy, seeing the situation deteriorating, struggling to find liberal practitioners for her son. She is also refused her care in hospitals in the sector. Camron is sent back from the college and multiplies acts of violence. But the teenager being “very large”, his parents are forced to call the gendarmes to master him.

“The gendarmes advised us to do it (file a complaint) so that someone finally takes care of our situation, deplores the mother. (…) His crises are more violent. (…) He tore my husband’s retina.”

The legitimate complaint is therefore the symbol of a general illness here. For Cindy, the priority is that her son “who suffers” be “protected” “I’m afraid that a drama will end up arriving” she warns.

“There is no plan for the number of autistic people after 14 or 18 years”

An extreme situation? Yes, but who is not so rare … Florent Chapel, president of Autism Info Service, himself the father of an autistic child, admits that he had recourse to the intervention of police officers in the face of a crisis of his teenager. “This is where we are sometimes” he explains to us. “For these cases, there are mobile intervention teams, the Samsah, but only in major cities. As for help calls to hospitals, a place within 48 hours is generally impossible.”

The reality, according to the expert, is that there is in France a real long -term follow -up problem of these children affected by autism disorders, out of early childhood. “”In reality, there is no study made on the number of places necessary for adolescents or young adults suffering from autism. For the elderly, the departments have obligation to study to know how many places it will take within 20 years in retirement homes. Same thing with children, we estimate the number at 5 years to open crèches, schools. “

But when it comes to children and people affected by autism, the accounts then seem much more vague. “”We know that there are about ‘700,000 autistic people. And there are about ‘300,000 autisms who need support. But we cannot tell us precisely how many places and support we need in each department “, regret Florent Chapel.

File a complaint, to have a wobbly situation recognized

As painful as a complaint made against his child, Florent Chapel then sees it as a form of courage, against the lack of care. He also invites parents to go further. “Faced with obvious gaps, these parents can also turn against the department for not taken care of and will certainly win.”

“When a child needs reinforced support, the department must provide it. And we, at Autisme Info Service, we can summon the department to act.” A journey that can also lead to compensation … useful for obtaining the necessary help.

“Today, these autistic children, we know how to detect them. And we know where they are. We can and we have to anticipate their needs. Abandoning them, as was this family was indeed putting parents and the child in a risky and complex situation!” concludes Florent Chapel.
