While many of us bet on a cup of smoking coffee or crisp pastry to wake up, these morning choices can disturb digestion, generate cravings, cause a peak of blood sugar or even alter the concentration. Here are the eight foods to avoid absolutely when your stomach is still empty … and what it would be better to favor instead.
Shadfish bread
It seems practical, easy to toaster, and yet the sandwich bread is far from being the friend of breakfast. Facked with additives, often very sweet and high glycemic index, it causes a brutal increase in blood sugar as soon as it wakes up. Result: a feeling of artificial energy quickly followed by a stroke of fatigue and cravings. The Yo-Yo effect on blood sugar can also promote snacking and long-term weight gain.
Coffee
It is the reflex of millions of French: a black coffee from the leap from the bed. But drink fasting coffee stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which can cause bitter, acidic lifts and bloating. Especially if the drink is very hot. For sensitive stomachs, this morning habit could become a daily source of discomfort.
Yogurt
Long promoted like a healthy food, yogurt, especially the one based on cow’s milk, is not ideal upon waking. On an empty stomach, dairy products can accentuate bloating and hinder digestion. The acidity of the still empty stomach does not help to assimilate these food well, better tolerated at the end of the meal. It is therefore better to reserve yogurt for lunch or dinner.
The spread
It evokes childhood and delicacy, but the spread is a caloric bomb when you wake up. Too oily, too sweet, it requires considerable effort at a liver still in slow motion. The body struggles to digest this mixture of fats and sugars, which often causes a feeling of heaviness. Better to opt for an alternative like an almond puree without added sugar.
Viennoiseries
Their attractive odor is everywhere in bakeries in the morning, but croissants and chocolate breads do not mix with an empty stomach. These pastries are rich in saturated fats and fast sugars, which leads to a peak of insulin followed by a brutal fall of energy. Consumed regularly on an empty stomach, they can also promote weight gain and poor regulation of appetite.
Banana
Banana is often seen as a healthy and practical fruit to take away, but it is not ideal to consume alone in the morning. On an empty stomach, its sugar and acid content can disrupt the digestive balance. It risks causing a peak of blood sugar and irritating the stomach. To take advantage of it without inconvenience, it is better to accompany it with whole grains or protein.
Tomatoes
At first glance, nothing is healthier than tomatoes. However, they contain tannic acids that can irritate the wall of the empty stomach. On an empty stomach, they are therefore likely to cause gastric pain or acid reflux, especially in people prone to digestive disorders. Better to integrate them into a full meal later during the day.
The charcuterie
Some love it to breakfast, French or English, but cold meats are too oily for a stomach at rest. As soon as they wake up, these salted products rich in saturated lipids weigh heavily on the digestive system. They slow down digestion and can cause a feeling of fatigue or heaviness. An unknown choice to start the day on the right foot.
