On TikTokthe videos follow one another: the
vaseline on eyelashes promises longer, denser, more curled eyelashes. We would even be tempted to put away the mascara, as the lash lift effect is so attractive in one brush stroke. This cult product, the petrolatum better known as Vaselinecan already be used for slugging, chapped lips or cuticles. Now, some people apply it to the eyelashes to gain shine and hold. Dermatologists from Weill Cornell Medicine, as well as specialists cited in the beauty press, have scrutinized the trend. The reality is more nuanced.
Vaseline on eyelashes: growth or simple sheathing effect?
Vaseline is an occlusive: it retains water and coats the fiber. On eyelash hairs, this conditioning effect can make them softer, shinier and less brittle. “can prevent loss and breakage of eyelashes by strengthening and lubricating them, making them less fragile when faced with eyelash curlers or mascara,” says Jack Levy, dermatologist interviewed by Byrdie.
Clearly, the illusion of a longer eyelash comes mainly from the curvature and shine. Vaseline does not actually make eyelashes grow. “It does not directly influence the length or thickness of the eyelashes“, adds Jack Levy. By reducing breakage and shedding, bangs may appear fuller over time, but the active does not alter growth.
Near the eye: risk of stye, chalazion and blurred vision
The eye contour remains a delicate area. The danger of using petroleum jelly too close to the eyes is that it can blur vision if it comes into contact with the eyes and can also cause irritation. “If petroleum jelly gets into the eye, it can cause prolonged blurred vision or, in rare cases, a reaction called conjunctival granuloma.“, explains Jack Levy.
Another point of attention: obstruction of the eyelid glands, causingstye
or
chalazion. “Frequent application of large amounts around the eye can block pores and lead to painful swelling“, adds Jack Levy. Ophthalmologists are alarmed by an explosion of patients who suffer from styes on the eyelids, caused by blockages in the glands and ducts at the eyelash line. Vaseline being difficult to eliminate, if this trend continues, these problems are likely to be more and more frequent.
Vaseline for eyelashes: safe instructions for use and tested alternatives
If you want to test, bet on a tiny quantity and impeccable hygiene. “Bacteria that naturally live in these areas have no place near the eyes and can cause dangerous infections.“, explains Jack Levy. Here are the actions recommended by dermatologists.
- Gently cleanse eyelashes and eyelids (baby shampoo without tears);
- On slightly damp eyelashes, apply a thin layer, a little above the root, with a sterile brush or a clean applicator, without touching the mucous membrane;
- Avoid using a finger that has been used for another product;
- Bend gently if necessary, without pulling;
- To remove, wash gently with a mild eye cleanser.
Certain profiles must abstain. “Avoid using it if you have a history of eye infections“, advises Shari Lipner, interviewed by Byrdie. “If used on the face, it should only be applied for short periods, usually less than a week“, adds Shari Lipner. For a sheathing and shiny finish, choose
transparent mascaras enriched with biotin or keratin, or eyelash serums Ophthalmologically tested, formulated for the eye contour.
