Zyban

Zyban is a smoking cessation medication used tohelp the user to stop/quit smoking. It is classified as an antidepressant drug prescribed to those wanting to quit smoking or those under a ‘stop smoking’ programme (counselling, support group, etc). These tablets also help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

This medicine is also available under various brand names and forms.

Zyban controls certain chemicals in the brain to help prevent the aftereffects of nicotine withdrawal symptoms and reduce the urge to smoke.

These tablets are often taken in conjunction with a stop-smoking programme such as counselling, support group, etc. to make it more effective for the user. Those experiencing nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, the urge to smoke, and restlessness can be relieved by taking Zyban.

Zyban is classified as an antidepressant drug. While it remains unestablished how Zyban works to reduce the urge to smoking, it helps restore the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

What are the benefits of using Zyban?

Smoking has a harmful and dangerous effect, especially to long-time users. Zyban is not recommended for people under 18 years old.

Zyban should not be taken if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• if you are allergic to bupropion or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (check product leaflet).
• if you are taking any other medicines which contain bupropion.
• if you have any of the following medical conditions: fits or seizures such as epilepsy, eating disorder or had one in the past (for example, bulimia or anorexia nervosa), severe liver problems, such as cirrhosis, and brain tumour.
• if you are usually a heavy drinker and you have just stopped drinking alcohol.
• if you have recently stopped taking sedatives or medicines to treat anxiety (especially benzodiazepines or similar medicines.
• if you have a bipolar disorder (extreme mood swings) or if taking medicines for depression or Parkinson’s disease called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or have taken them in the last 14 days.

Inform your doctor if you are taking or recently have taken any other medications before using Zyban. Certain medicines can affect or be affected by Zyban.

Drinking alcohol may be banned by your doctor during the use of this medicine as or may be advised to limit drinking to as little as possible,

Taking Zyban may have an effect on a urine test. Inform firsthand that you are taking Zyban before the urine test.

Do not take Zyban if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby. If breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using it. Zyban can pass into breast milk.

Do not drive or operate machinery when under this medication as it can cause you to feel dizzy or lightheaded.

How do I store Zyban?

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack.

Do not store this medicine above 25 °C.
