What should I know before taking Zyban? 

Zyban is not recommended for people under 18 years old.

Zyban should not be taken if any of the following conditions apply to you:

  • if you are allergic to bupropion or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (check product leaflet).
  • if you are taking any other medicines which contain bupropion.
  • if you have any of the following medical conditions: fits or seizures such as epilepsy, eating disorder or had one in the past (for example, bulimia or anorexia nervosa), severe liver problems, such as cirrhosis, and brain tumour.
  • if you are usually a heavy drinker and you have just stopped drinking alcohol.
  • if you have recently stopped taking sedatives or medicines to treat anxiety (especially benzodiazepines or similar medicines.
  • if you have a bipolar disorder (extreme mood swings) or if taking medicines for depression or Parkinsonā€™s disease called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or have taken them in the last 14 days.

Inform your doctor if you are taking or recently have taken any other medications before using Zyban. Certain medicines can affect or be affected by Zyban.

Drinking alcohol may be banned by your doctor during the use of this medicine as or may be advised to limit drinking to as little as possible,

Taking Zyban may have an effect on a urine test. Inform firsthand that you are taking Zyban before the urine test.

Do not take Zyban if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby. If breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using it. Zyban can pass into breast milk.

Do not drive or operate machinery when under this medication as it can cause you to feel dizzy or lightheaded.

How do I store Zyban?

Take a Zyban tablet by mouth with a glass of water, usually twice a day with or without meals. If you experience an upset stomach, take the Zyban tablet after meals. Make sure to take the Zyban tablets with an 8-hour interval before the next dose, or as prescribed by your doctor to avoid any health risk. Avoid taking before going to bed as it may affect your sleeping.

The tablet should be swallowed whole when taking. Do not chew or crush the tablet. It will result in making the tablet ineffective or may result in a greater risk of side effects such as seizures.

The dosage of Zyban depends on your condition and your response to the medication. Follow the dosage given by the doctor. Do not exceed or take less than what is prescribed. Do not take more than 150mg in a single dose. Do not exceed 300mg a day.

Zyban dosage

The prescribed dosage for Zyban is 150mg (1 tablet) every day for 3 days, followed by taking 150mg twice a day. Start by taking Zyban tablets at least once a week to stop smoking. A full treatment usually lasts for 7 to 12 weeks maximum.
