Vaginal ring NuvaRing (brand) is a small, plastic ring inserted in the vagina used to prevent pregnancy. It works by releasing the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone into the bloodstream, preventing the release of an egg. 

The NuvaRing does not protect the user from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or HIV. Furthermore, it is not suitable for use for all women.

A flexible and soft ring, the NuvaRing must be placed inside the vagina correctly in order to be an effective contraceptive. It should stay steady once inserted. 

NuvaRing UK works by releasing a dose of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, which stops the eggs from leaving the ovaries.

It also works by thickening the cervical mucus to prevent the sperm to enter the cervix and thinning the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilized egg. 

The contraceptive ring is worn for 3 weeks (21 days) followed by a break for seven days. When the device is removed, menstruation will start to flow two or three days after. A new contraceptive ring can be used again after 7 days. 

The user will be protected immediately from pregnancy if the contraceptive ring is inserted within the first 5 days of the start of the period. The ring can still be inserted if the menstrual period lasts for more than 5 days. 

If the contraceptive ring is inserted after 5 days from the start of the period, the user should wait for 7 days for the protection to take effect. Additional contraceptives such as a condom or spermicide can be used within the 7 days. 

NuvaRing as a method of preventing pregnancy is said to be 99 per cent effective if used correctly. Inserting the ring into the vagina will release the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone, which stops the eggs from leaving the ovaries. 

A vaginal/ contraceptive ring is also easy to insert and take out. It may also help with premenstrual symptoms and has no long-term effect on a woman’s fertility.

Follow the steps below to insert a NuvaRing into the vagina:

• Start with a clean hand. Wash and dry your hands.
• Place the ring between your thumb and index finger
• In a comfortable position (either by lying down, squatting, or standing), gently push the ring inside the vagina. It cannot go far due to the cervix. 
• For three weeks, keep the ring inside. 
• Remove the ring after 21 days by gently hooking the index finger and pulling out the vaginal ring.
