What is Canesten Thrush External Cream?

Canesten Thrush External Cream is a vaginal cream used to alleviate the irritation of the vulva which is caused by vaginal thrush. Thrush is a condition caused by fungi or yeast that affects the vagina and the surrounding area of the vagina as well as the breasts and nipples or the end of the penis. It can also affect other areas of skin, such as the armpits, top of the inner thighs or groin and between the fingers.

What Is Canesten Thrush External Cream Used For?

Yeasts such as Candida albicans may cause infection and result in symptoms of vaginal thrush. Canesten thrush external cream is used to give comfort and alleviate these external symptoms of the infection.

This medicine is a recommended treatment for thrush in adults aged 16 to 60 years. This cream can also be used on your partner’s penis if he has thrush as well.

How Does Canesten Thrush External Cream Work?

Canesten thrush external cream contains 2% clotrimazole as its active ingredient. Clotrimazole is an antifungal medicine that targets the Candida albicans fungi that cause thrush infections.

Clotrimazole eliminates the Candida fungi by making holes appear in their cell membranes. These holes cause the vital components of the fungal cells to gush out, which exterminate the fungi and clear up the infection.

Canesten external cream is applied to the outer area of the vagina such as the vulva and the labia. This is done to help provide immediate relief from the external signs of thrush infection, such as itching, inflammation, and soreness. However, this cream will not be able to treat the infection inside your vagina.  You should use it in combination with other thrush treatments, such as clotrimazole pessaries or cream that are inserted into the vagina, or oral antifungal medicines. You may ask your doctor about which products to use together.

If your sexual partner also has symptoms of thrush infection ( for example, in men signs are soreness and redness of the penis, tightness of the foreskin or white, odourless discharge from the penis), it is essential to have them treated at the same time as well to prevent reinfection for both of you. Canesten thrush external cream can also be used as a treatment cream for the penis.

How Do I Use Canesten Thrush External Cream?

Before using the Canesten cream, make sure to wash your hands first. Apply a thin amount of Canesten thrush cream evenly to the vulva and surrounding area two to three times a day. Spread it into the affected area evenly and gently and then wash your hands thoroughly.

Women can keep using this cream until the symptoms of the infection will slowly disappear. However, if your symptoms continue to persist despite using it within a week you should consult your doctor you might need to use another medicine in conjunction with the cream to treat the internal vaginal infection effectively.

Men with symptoms of thrush should apply Canesten thrush cream thinly to the penis two to three times a day for up to two weeks. Spread the cream in softly and then wash your hands after using the cream.

Men should continue applying this cream until the symptoms of the infection have disappeared. However, if your symptoms have not gotten better within two weeks of using Canesten thrush external cream, you should consult your doctor.
