A patch contraceptive is more than 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy when used correctly. However, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV.
Who can use the Evra patch?
Before using the Evra patch, consult with your doctor and inform them of your and your family’s medical history. Tell them about your illnesses, operations that you may have had, and the medicines you are taking.
If you have the following conditions, you may not be suitable to use the patch:
- Pregnant or you think may be pregnant
- Breastfeeding a baby less than 6 weeks old
- Smoker and is 35 years of age or above
- 35 years old or above and stopped smoking less than a year ago
- Overweight
- Taking certain medicines, such as some antibiotics, St John’s Wort, or medicines used to treat epilepsy, tuberculosis (TB) or HIV

How does Evra patch work?
Evra is called a combined hormonal contraceptive because it contains two types of sex hormones: a progestogen (norelgestromin) and an oestrogen (Ethinyl estradiol), that prevents the release of an egg (ovulation) each month. It also works by thickening the cervical mucus to prevent the sperm from entering the cervix, and by thinning the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilized egg.
How do I use an Evra patch?
Contraception patch Evra can only be taken with a valid prescription from a doctor. Make sure to always follow the doctor’s advice and read the available patient information leaflet that comes inside the medicine. Patch contraceptives may not be suitable for all women.
Evra comes in a form of a sticky patch that you apply to the skin. Open the packet with your clean hands and remove the clear plastic from the patch. Apply the patch firmly into the skin. You can place it on either the abdomen/ stomach, buttocks, upper back, or your outside upper arm. Do not apply it on irritated skin, areas where it may be removed by your clothing, or on your breasts. Leave it for 7 days and then change into a new patch (on day 8). Repeat for 3 weeks and then have a 7- day break without a patch. You will still have contraceptive protection during the 7-day period.
Use only one patch at a time. Do not alter or cut them in any way. Do not use the same patch for more than 7 days. Do not also put cream or lotion over the area. It is recommended to apply the patch in a different spot from the previous one to avoid irritation.
